120 Micra Reflex, 18 H.A.R.D. 212 stage monitors and 4 Kanguro systems used for Italy’s most-watched TV show live from Studio 5 at Cinecittà

“Uno di noi” is the name of Italy’s most-watched TV show – with audience figures reaching peaks of over 10 million viewers – for which state broadcaster RAI fielded a large workforce and an impressive amount of cutting edge equipment. Hosted by the threesome Gianni Morandi, Lorella Cuccarini and Paola Cortellesi, the transmission was staged live at Cinecittà’s Studio 5, the largest in Italy (85 metres long, 35 wide and 14 high) and famous for having been the set of the films by Federico Fellini, to whom it’s dedicated.

As far as the audio system was concerned, Brescia manufacturer Outline did its part, and in fact for speech reinforcement throughout the studio, no less than 120 Micra Reflex enclosures were used, half of which were strategically located in the audience and the others used for covering all the other areas: the entrance, flies and bridges, as well as the area behind the house band/orchestra and technical zones.

Fourteen monitor feeds were entrusted to eighteen H.A.R.D. 212 enclosures and four self-amplified Kanguro systems were chosen for rehearsal room sound. The power amps used were all from Outline’s T series of digital models and signal processors were Genius 6, also by Outline. The prime-time Saturday show debuted on RAI’s channel 1 on 28th September and after 15 editions ended on January 6th 2003.

Used again after successful application on Adriano Celentano’s 2001 series of shows, the Micra we further appreciated for their key characteristics: as well as being compact, they reproduce speech at high volumes without distortion or feedback. According to those working on the show, they were heard loud and clear in every corner of the studio. Positive opinions were also expressed on the H.A.R.D. 212 stage monitors, ideal for use in this type of show, thanks to their low profile and, according to the sound engineers, they also ensure a linear response over medium/long distances, as well as giving distortion-free reproduction at high levels.
